Lady Hardinge Medical College is unique and exclusive college in India for the training of women undergraduate student in Medicine. The college was founded in order to overcome the orthodox thinking prevailing in the contemporary India amongst the parents minds against educating their daughters in co educational colleges. The institution was also meant to commemorate the visit of Her Majesty Queen Mary to India . It was therefore decided to name the institution after her. The dynamic Lady Hardinge, wife of the then Viceroy of India, started the movement to raise Public funds for this purpose. Her tragic death before the completion of the project caused dismay, Queen Mary then advised the authorities to name the institution after Lady Hardinge to perpetuate her memory hence formally the institution Lady Hardinge Medical College was inaugurated in 1916 by her husband Lord Hardinge. This fulfilled the cherished desire of his beloved wife to have exclusive woman medical college in India.
