Dr. Nityanand's most important contribution
has been the development of experimental models of pulmonary
hypertension and atherosclerosis, and in new lipid-lowering
drugs. Using these and other experimental models, she
and her coworkers have tested a number of traditional
remedies and some synthetic compounds for lipid lowering
activity. As a result, a modern hypolipidaemic drug 'Gugulipid'
was introduced into the market. She has also established
the safety and efficacy of Centhroman, a new weekly administered
nonsteroidal contraceptive pill, through an indepth study
of the morphological features of the female genital organs
in normal cases and Centchroman users and by drawing a
baseline for these characters for the Indian population.
Consequently Catchroman has been marketed and also approved
for introduction in the National Family Planning Programme.
She held many important positions such as Consultant
(1989-93), Deputy Director and Head, Clinical and Experimental
Medicine (1986-89), Assistant Director (1979-86), all
at Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow.

Society for Atheroscelrosis Research, Indian Society for
Toxicity (Executive Member, 1981) and Uttar Pradesh Academy
of Science; Member of International Heart Research Society
(Indian Section), Indian Medical Association and Indian
